In line with the Department of Agriculture's (DA) Rice Resiliency Program II (RRPII) of the Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat (ALPAS) Kontra sa COVID-19 Response, the farmers in Negros Oriental received hybrid rice seeds from DA-Central Visayas (DA7).

The province was allocated with 3,478 bags of hybrid rice seeds to cover 21 municipalities including cities which met the criteria of the program. All seeds were now fully distributed and received by the farmers.
The Provincial.Agriculture Office (PAO) , Local Government Units (LGUs) as well as the seed suppliers like the SL AgriTech, played a big role in the RRP, also assisted in the said distribution.
Basay was one of the municipalities that got a share of 200 bags for the 200 farmer beneficiaries.
During the distributions, Dana Mae Sampilo, DA-7's Rice Action Officer of the Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office (PATCO) in Negros Oriental, briefed the beneficiaries on the program (RRP2) as well as the process of using the hybrid rice.
One bag of hybrid seeds contains 15 kilograms good for 1 hectare.
Sampilo assured the farmers that the seeds are of good quality with optimum yield potentials.
She advised the farmers to follow the recommended soaking time of the seeds and number of seedlings per hill so it will have a good yield.
Juan Milares of Barangay Poblacion who tills 0.9 hectare rice field for 30 years expressed his gratitude to DA.
"Daku kaayo og tabang ang binhi sa humay nga gihatag sa DA kanamong mga gagmay'ng mag-uuma kay maglisod mi ug palit sa maayo nga kalidad nga binhi. Ug naa man gani mi kwarta, mas unahon man namo og palit ang kunsomo. Manghinaut mi nga magmaayo ang tubo sa humay ug nga unta walay kalamidad nga mo-igo aron motaas among abot," Milares said.
(The rice seeds that the DA had given us helped a lot especially to small farmers like me. We can hardly buy good quality of rice seeds. If we have money, we prioritize buying food for consumption. I hope that the seeds will have better growth performance and that no calamity will occur so that we can have an increased harvest).
The rest of the recipients were also thankful to DA and they look forward for more interventions since rice farming is their source of livelihood.###
